JEE Examination Overview

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to undergraduate engineering programs in NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions, as well as IITs.

JEE Main Structure:

  • Physics: 30 questions (20 MCQs + 10 numerical value type)
  • Chemistry: 30 questions (20 MCQs + 10 numerical value type)
  • Mathematics: 30 questions (20 MCQs + 10 numerical value type)
  • Total Questions: 90 questions
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Mode: Computer-based test (CBT)

JEE Advanced Structure:

  • Paper 1: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (3 hours)
  • Paper 2: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (3 hours)
  • Question Types: Multiple choice, numerical answer, match the following
  • Eligibility: Top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers

JEE Main is conducted twice a year (January and April sessions), while JEE Advanced is conducted once a year for admission to IITs.

JEE Syllabus & Pattern

Examination Pattern - JEE Main:

  • Total Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Subjects: 3 subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)
  • Total Questions: 90 questions (30 per subject)
  • Question Types: 20 MCQs + 10 Numerical Value Type per subject
  • Marking Scheme: +4 marks for correct answer, -1 for wrong MCQ, 0 for NVAT
  • Total Marks: 300 marks
  • Sessions: Conducted twice yearly (January & April)

Physics Syllabus:

  • Mechanics: Laws of Motion, Work Energy Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids
  • Heat & Thermodynamics: Kinetic Theory of Gases, Thermodynamics
  • Waves & Oscillations: Simple Harmonic Motion, Wave Motion
  • Electricity & Magnetism: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current, Electromagnetic Induction, AC Circuits
  • Optics: Ray Optics, Wave Optics
  • Modern Physics: Dual Nature of Matter, Atoms & Nuclei, Electronic Devices

Chemistry Syllabus:

  • Physical Chemistry: Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Gaseous State, Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibrium, Ionic Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Classification of Elements, Hydrogen, s-Block, p-Block, d-Block & f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, Metallurgy
  • Organic Chemistry: Purification & Characterization, Hydrocarbons, Haloalkanes, Alcohols, Aldehydes, Carboxylic Acids, Amines, Biomolecules

Mathematics Syllabus:

  • Algebra: Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Sequences & Series, Permutations & Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Matrices & Determinants
  • Coordinate Geometry: Straight Lines, Circles, Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola
  • Calculus: Limits, Continuity, Differentiation, Applications of Derivatives, Integration, Applications of Integrals, Differential Equations
  • Trigonometry: Trigonometric Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions
  • Vector & 3D Geometry: Vectors, Three Dimensional Geometry
  • Statistics & Probability: Statistics, Probability

Eligibility Criteria & Cut-offs

Educational Qualification:

  • Passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
  • Minimum 75% marks in Class 12 for General category (65% for SC/ST)
  • Must be among top 20 percentile in Class 12 board exam

Age Limit:

  • JEE Main: No age limit
  • JEE Advanced: Maximum 25 years (30 years for SC/ST)
  • Attempts: Maximum 3 attempts for JEE Advanced

JEE Main 2024 Cut-offs (NIT Admission):

  • General Category: 88-95 percentile
  • OBC: 68-75 percentile
  • SC: 45-55 percentile
  • ST: 35-45 percentile

JEE Advanced 2024 Cut-offs:

  • Common Rank List: 114 marks (out of 360)
  • OBC-NCL: 76 marks
  • SC: 57 marks
  • ST: 57 marks
