UGC NET Examination Overview

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to determine eligibility for Assistant Professor and award Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

Examination Structure:

  • Paper 1: Teaching & Research Aptitude (50 questions, 100 marks)
  • Paper 2: Subject-specific paper (100 questions, 200 marks)
  • Duration: 3 hours (Paper 1: 1 hour, Paper 2: 2 hours)

UGC NET is conducted twice a year (June & December cycles) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The exam is conducted for 86 subjects across various disciplines including Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Languages.

UGC NET Syllabus & Pattern

Examination Pattern:

  • Total Duration: 3 hours
  • Number of Papers: 2 papers (Paper 1 compulsory, Paper 2 subject-specific)
  • Total Questions: 150 questions (50 in Paper 1, 100 in Paper 2)
  • Question Types: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Marking Scheme: +2 marks for each correct answer, no negative marking
  • Total Marks: 300 marks

Paper 1 - Teaching & Research Aptitude:

  • Teaching Aptitude: Teaching methods, learning theories, evaluation systems
  • Research Aptitude: Research methodology, thesis writing, research ethics
  • Reading Comprehension: Passage-based questions testing comprehension skills
  • Communication: Communication types, barriers, mass media
  • Mathematical Reasoning: Number series, coding-decoding, logical reasoning
  • Logical Reasoning: Analogies, patterns, cause and effect
  • Data Interpretation: Tables, graphs, charts analysis
  • Information & Communication Technology: Computer basics, internet, digital initiatives
  • People, Development & Environment: Sustainable development, environmental issues
  • Higher Education System: Indian education system, NEP 2020, governance

Paper 2 - Subject Specific:

Paper 2 syllabus varies according to the subject chosen by the candidate. It covers the core concepts, theories, and applications specific to the selected discipline at the postgraduate level.

Eligibility Criteria & Cut-offs

Educational Qualification:

  • For JRF & Assistant Professor: Master's degree with 55% marks (50% for OBC/SC/ST/PwD)
  • For Assistant Professor only: Master's degree with 55% marks or SET/SLET qualified

Age Limit:

  • For JRF: Maximum 30 years (35 for OBC, 35 for SC/ST, relaxation for PwD)
  • For Assistant Professor: No age limit

UGC NET Cut-offs (General Category):

  • JRF: Usually 45-50% aggregate in both papers
  • Assistant Professor: Usually 40-45% in Paper 2
  • Paper 1 Qualifying: Minimum 40% marks required

Subject-wise Variations:

Cut-offs vary significantly based on the subject, number of candidates, and difficulty level. Popular subjects like English, Political Science, and Education typically have higher cut-offs.
